ChatGPT: A Digital Tool or a Threat?

In a world where information technology is constantly evolving, we are on the cusp of a new era. This is due to innovations such as ChatGPT. A year ago, no one was familiar with this phenomenon, but today almost everyone uses it. At INNOV8iON, ChatGPT has become almost indispensable. But it’s also coming up more and more often at our sister company, iQibt. “In our field, it’s important to embrace these kinds of tools because their impact is so significant that the difference between those who use them and those who don’t will become clearly visible.”

ChatGPT is an example of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) capable of understanding and generating human text. It can be used for a wide range of applications. This ranges from writing simple code to software development. Frank van Grevenstein, sales manager at INNOV8iON and iQibt: “ChatGPT is just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many other AI applications in development that will radically change the way we work and communicate.”

Threat or opportunity?

Iemke Kooijman, an INNOV8iON Partner, currently views ChatGPT primarily as an asset. “It’s actually going to help us in a lot of areas because ChatGPT can take over the repetitive work. Writing code, for example, involves a lot of recurring patterns. Let ChatGPT generate those so I can focus on the high-value tasks,” says Iemke. Julian Kuipers, a Technology Expert, agrees. “It’s important to pay attention to ChatGPT because it will eventually set us apart. For example, someone who uses ChatGPT can do the work in one hour instead of eight,” says Julian.

Still, Julian is also convinced that ChatGPT can feel threatening to many people. “This development could mean that people will no longer have to do certain parts of their work themselves. But I do think everyone will have to get used to it. This train has left the station and can’t be stopped.”

Although ChatGPT has only recently become established in our society, that doesn’t necessarily mean it poses a threat. Frank: “You might feel overwhelmed because we don’t yet know what kind of impact this will have. Still, it really depends on how you use it.” Julian agrees with that. “Of course, there are risks involved, but it also has its benefits. Think of money transfers or calling family members who live far away. But you can also be scammed or blackmailed. So keep thinking critically and double-check that what you’re seeing is accurate. Naivety, after all, will be one of the biggest pitfalls.”

A match made in heaven

The digital assistant seems like a match made in heaven. Frank: “ChatGPT will lead to a major leap in productivity because it can take over a lot of routine work.” However, it is important to monitor this on an ongoing basis. “Of course, it’s nice that writing code is a lot easier now. But you still need human expertise to make sure it’s really correct,” says Iemke.

In addition to iQibt and INNOV8iON, SAP is also embracing ChatGPT. “And they’re not the only ones,” says Iemke. “You can see that more and more companies are starting to use this AI tool because it seems much more urgent than other trends. That’s because it’s suddenly applicable to everyone.” During the weekly Friday afternoon get-together at INNOV8iON, you’ll often hear the term “ChatGPT” come up. “I try to encourage people in this area because it’s an important technology that’s relevant right now. That’s why we’re also tailoring our knowledge sessions to it.”

The Future of ChatGPT

The three gentlemen do not dare to say with certainty what the coming years will look like. Iemke: “You’re going to see an increasingly significant difference between organizations that use ChatGPT and those that don’t. That’s because they’ll be able to innovate much faster. Maybe not right away, but certainly in the long run. I also think that in five years, we’ll be the ones managing ChatGPT rather than developing it.” That is why iQibt and INNOV8iON believe it is important to focus on this issue. Julian: “By gaining experience in this area, we can grow as experts and integrate AI for our clients. Fear of AI will ultimately hold you back instead of helping you become a leader.”

Only time will tell exactly how ChatGPT will shape our world, but one thing is certain. We are at the beginning of an exciting journey into the world of artificial intelligence and information technology.
